Development of a Strategic Regional Plan of Action - March 2005

The purpose of this Workshop was to bring together key parties to initiate discussions on strategic regional needs with respect to planning for future offshore oil and gas development in the Beaufort Sea. Desired outcomes were:

  • a shared understanding of the current level of preparedness;
  • a summary of the needs and expectations of participants;
  • clarity with respect to the key gaps and priorities to be addressed;
  • opportunities and tools for moving forward; and
  • a community-based strategic regional plan of action for doing so.

The workshop wrapped up with the following conclusions:

  • A strategic plan of action will require a strong commitment from the parties represented at this Workshop;
  • The plan of action must be kept practical and useful, and participants have to be kept informed;
  • The plan should not separate physical, social and cultural aspects, as they are interconnected;
  • A Steering Committee is needed, led by Inuvialuit, with a small support group based in Inuvik;
  • The mandate of the Steering Committee should be to work on behalf of all the Parties; and
  • The Steering Committee should meet as soon as possible to discuss membership and terms of reference, and to begin developing a workplan
